Overview

Conquian (widely regarded as the historical ancestor of the entire Rummy family, known in Spanish as Coon Can) is a sharp, tactical two-player game played with a traditional 40-card Spanish-style deck. Its most defining and unique characteristic is that cards drawn from the center pile are never added to your hand; they must be melded immediately onto the table or passed.

Objective

Be the first player to form legal melds comprising exactly 11 cards on the table using the cards from your initial 10-card hand plus one card taken from the center.

Setup

Cardems uses a traditional 40-card pack created by removing all 8s, 9s, and 10s (or standard 40-card Spanish pack: Ace through 7, Jack, Queen, King):

  • In sequence runs, the 7 connects directly to the Jack (e.g., 5-6-7-J-Q is a valid continuous run).
  • Each player is dealt 10 cards.
  • The remaining 20 cards form the face-down stock in the center.

How to Play

Turn Structure & The Center Card

A turn in Conquian revolves around deciding the fate of a single exposed center card:

  1. Center Card Offer: A card is revealed either from the face-down stock or from an opponent's discard.
  2. Immediate Meld or Pass: The active player may use the center card only if they can meld it immediately on the table (combining it with cards from hand or existing table melds).
  3. Passing to Opponent: If the active player cannot or chooses not to use the card, the opponent is offered the opportunity to meld it. If both pass on a stock card, it is discarded to the waste pile and a new card is drawn.
  4. Discard: Whenever you take and meld a center card, you must discard one card from your hand face up to the center.

Legal Melds

Melds must consist of at least three cards:

  • Groups (Tercias / Sets): Three or four cards of the same rank in different suits (e.g., 6♠-6♥-6♦).
  • Sequences (Escaleras / Runs): Three to eight consecutive cards of the same suit. Remember that 7 is followed immediately by Jack (e.g., 6♦-7♦-J♦-Q♦).

Rearranging Melds: Players are allowed to borrow cards from their own existing table melds to combine with the center card, as long as all remaining and newly formed melds stay strictly legal.

Important Rules: Forcing (Pagar)

A hallmark mechanic of Conquian is forcing (pagar / paying):

  • If the current center card can be legally added to an opponent's existing meld on the table, and the opponent has unmelded cards in hand, you may force the opponent to take that card.
  • The opponent must incorporate the card into their meld and discard a card from their hand, potentially breaking their planned combinations.

Scoring and Winning

The game concludes the instant one player successfully melds 11 cards:

Game ResultConditionOutcome
WinPlayer completes 11 melded cards on the tableWins the round / match
DrawStock pile runs out with neither player reaching 11 cardsRound declared a draw (tie)

Because each player starts with 10 cards, melding 11 cards means you have completely emptied your hand onto the table using your original 10 cards plus exactly one claimed center card.

Strategy

  • Watch your opponent's meld layout: If your opponent has 8 or 9 cards already melded, avoid discarding cards that allow them to reach 11.
  • Use forcing tactically: Forcing an opponent to take a 4th card into a 3-card set wastes their discard and forces them to surrender a card from their private hand.

Variations

Cardems provides the authentic two-player 40-card Conquian ruleset featuring standard 10-card deals, 11-card win condition, strict center-to-table meld obligations, 7-to-Jack sequence progression, and full forcing (pagar) rules.

FAQ

Why are there no 8s or 9s in the deck?

Conquian is historically played with the traditional 40-card Spanish-suited baraja (or stripped Anglo-American deck), where 8s and 9s are removed so 7 connects straight to Jack.

Can I hold the drawn card in my hand to meld on a later turn?

No. In Conquian, any card claimed from the center must be placed into a table meld on the very same turn.

What happens if the stock runs out before anyone gets 11 cards?

The game ends as a draw; the discard pile is not reshuffled.
